Legal and Democratic Services

Client centred professional legal and democratic services

Our Lexcel accredited public sector legal team provides a comprehensive package of services which cover all the legal issues and challenges which face local government and other organisations, including educational settings, National Parks, Fire and Rescue Authorities, and other Local Authority controlled companies.

Our highly regarded Schools Legal Advice Helpline has been in operation for over ten years and deals with a broad range of queries from schools, academies and other educational establishments.  We understand the duties and challenges faced by schools and are familiar and well-practiced in handling and advising on them.

Benefits for your organisation

Our competitive pricing is highly cost effective and transparent, especially when compared with the cost of legal services from the private sector.

We have specific, real life experience of the issues faced by the public sector and have a genuine desire to understand the issues which are important to you.  Our high quality, effective and professional service is fully responsive to your needs.

We pride ourselves on delivering an outstanding level of customer care, putting the customer at the heart of everything we do and guaranteeing that every customer will get the same high quality of care and advice, whatever their location or needs.

We offer direct access to a legal advice helpline and a wide range of legal advice from experienced Barristers, Solicitors, Chartered Legal Executives and Legal Officers.

Our brochure lists more detail on the services we provide.

The Legal Advice Scheme provides schools and other educational settings with legal advice and support for up to one hour per enquiry from experienced public sector Solicitors, Lawyers and Legal Officers at very competitive rates through a dedicated helpline, email and post.  The Helpline can be called as many times as necessary to request advice.  The following is included in the Legal Advice Scheme:

  • The provision of a dedicated telephone helpline manned by a Lawyer experienced in education matters who can advise on a wide variety of legal issues encountered by educational establishments, for example, the rights of separated parents and disputes surrounding their child’s education, safeguarding issues, legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities (statutory or otherwise), complaints, misuse of social media, support with contractual and finance procedure rules as appropriate to the establishment, and other issues.  The Helpline operates during office hours from Monday to Friday throughout the year (excluding Bank Holidays)
  • Where advice cannot be provided by the Helpline Lawyer, the educational establishment will be directed to other colleagues within Legal Services who have the expertise to deal with the request for advice
  • The provision of regular updates on topical issues

Legal Services will endeavour to support the educational establishment whenever possible to secure appropriate advice and representation from other sources as necessary in the infrequent event that Legal Services does not have the necessary expertise in-house.

Legal advice on more complex matters requiring more than one hour’s work or other enquiries leading to prolonged support and assistance in excess of one hour.  Examples of work may include extensive research, protracted correspondence, conduct of Court proceedings (if not part of the core service), negotiation of contracts and so forth.

This includes:

  • Support to act as an independent investigator and report on parental complaints
  • Offering a clerking service to a Complaints Appeal Panel and providing them with independent legal advice during a complaints hearing
